دانش ژئومورفولوژی به عنوان یکی از شاخه‌های مهم جغرافیای طبیعی است که هدف نهایی آن کمک به بهبود حیات انسان است. فرایندهای ژئومورفیک در زندگی و فعالیت‌های انسان، آثار قابل توجهی دارد و از سوی دیگر، فعالیت‌ها و رفتارهای انسان نیز خود بر این واحدهای ژئومورفولوژی و فرایندهای ژئومورفیک تأثیر می‌گذارد و این تأثیر متقابل و دو جانبه، استدلال فوق را قوّت می‌بخشد و آنرا تأیید می‌کند
استان گیلان به لحاظ موقعیت جغرافیایی خود در بین دو واحد بزرگ ساختمانی البرز ـ تالش و جلگه خزر واقع شده و محیط مناسبی را برای تشکیل اشکال و پدیده‌های مورفودینامیک فراهم ساخته است. ساکنان این منطقه جهت نیازمندی‌های خود به خصوص با ورود تکنولوژی‌های جدید در عرصه کشت و صنعت موجب تغییراتی در سیستم اکولوژیکی شده و به علت عدم آگاهی از نحوه فعالیت جریانات سطحی و نوسانات آب دریای خزر اقدام به خانه‌سازی در بستر‌های فرعی و اصلی رودخانه‌ها و در حریم دریا نموده‌اند. این عدم آگاهی از فعل و انفعالات محیط طبیعی اطراف خود، سالانه موجب خسارت‌های عظیم جانی و مالی در محدوده‌های مخاطره‌آمیز شده است. حوادث طبیعی از جمله زلزله، سیل، زمین لغزه، ریزش، بهمن، پیش‌روی و پس‌روی آب دریا در سال‌های اخیر خساراتی را بر این استان واردکرده
